Copyright and Licensing
The Archives of Biotechnology and Biomedicine is an open-access journal committed to ethical publishing and respect for intellectual property. We recognize that authors are the rightful owners of their work and that transparent licensing ensures clarity for readers, educators, policymakers, and the wider scientific community. This section outlines our copyright and licensing policies, which are designed to maximize the dissemination and reuse of knowledge while safeguarding author rights.
Copyright Retention
Authors publishing with the journal retain the copyright of their work. This means authors maintain full legal ownership of their intellectual property, including the rights to reproduce, distribute, and adapt the content. By retaining copyright, authors are empowered to reuse their work in teaching, future publications, and derivative projects without restrictions imposed by the publisher.
When submitting a manuscript, authors grant the journal a non-exclusive license to publish, archive, and disseminate their article. This license permits the journal to distribute the work under open-access principles while allowing authors to retain control of their intellectual contributions.
Open-Access Licensing
All articles are published under the Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International License (CC BY 4.0). This license provides maximum flexibility in the reuse of scholarly works while ensuring that original authors receive proper attribution. Under CC BY 4.0:
- Readers may copy, distribute, transmit, and adapt the work, even for commercial purposes.
- Proper attribution must always be given to the original authors and source.
- No additional permission is required from the authors or publisher for lawful reuse.
- Authors retain the right to deposit published works in institutional and subject repositories without embargo.
Author Rights
Authors publishing with us enjoy the following rights:
- Ownership of copyright.
- The right to reuse figures, tables, and excerpts in future publications with attribution.
- The right to deposit published versions in repositories immediately after publication.
- The right to distribute copies of their work to students, colleagues, and collaborators.
- The right to present and adapt their content in conferences, teaching, or derivative works.
These rights ensure that authors remain at the center of the scholarly communication process and benefit fully from the dissemination of their research.
Third-Party Material
Authors who include figures, images, or other content from third-party sources must secure permission to reuse such material. Any borrowed content must be accompanied by a statement confirming permissions and proper acknowledgment of the source. Where third-party content is licensed under Creative Commons, authors must respect the specific conditions of that license.
Publisher License
By submitting a manuscript, authors grant the journal a license to:
- Publish the work in print and digital formats.
- Index and archive the work in databases and repositories.
- Distribute the work through publisher platforms and partner services.
- Deposit metadata with CrossRef and assign Digital Object Identifiers (DOIs).
This license is non-exclusive, ensuring that authors retain complete rights to their work while granting the journal permission to make the article publicly available.
Reuse of Published Articles
Readers, educators, and institutions may freely reuse published content under the CC BY 4.0 license. Examples of permitted reuse include:
- Incorporating figures into teaching materials and presentations.
- Translating content into other languages with appropriate attribution.
- Building upon published findings in new research or derivative works.
- Distributing articles to colleagues, students, and networks without restriction.
Attribution Requirements
Proper attribution is required whenever journal content is reused. Attribution must include:
- The original author(s) name(s).
- The title of the article.
- The journal name and publisher.
- The DOI or permanent link to the article.
- A statement identifying the CC BY 4.0 license.
Attribution preserves academic credit and ensures transparency in the reuse of scholarly work.
Compliance With Funder Mandates
Many funding agencies require that publications resulting from supported research be made available under open-access licenses. By publishing under CC BY 4.0, the journal ensures compliance with Plan S, Horizon Europe, the Wellcome Trust, NIH, and other funder requirements. Authors can confidently submit knowing that their work meets funder mandates.
Commercial Use
The CC BY 4.0 license permits commercial reuse of published content. Commercial entities may distribute, adapt, or build upon journal articles provided proper attribution is given. This openness promotes innovation and ensures that scientific knowledge can inform both academic and applied contexts.
Exceptions and Special Cases
In rare instances, authors may request alternative licensing arrangements. Such requests are considered on a case-by-case basis, particularly when funder or institutional policies require a different license. Any alternative arrangements must be approved by the Editor-in-Chief prior to publication.
Plagiarism and Licensing Violations
Unauthorized reproduction or use of journal content that violates the CC BY 4.0 license or infringes copyright will be investigated. The journal reserves the right to pursue corrective action, issue retraction notices, or notify relevant institutions in cases of serious infringement.
Long-Term Preservation
Articles published under CC BY 4.0 are permanently archived in digital repositories, ensuring that copyright and licensing terms remain enforceable. By embedding licensing metadata in article files, the journal guarantees that license information is preserved for future reference.
